It is one of the most common questions people have about tea, especially in the evening: will this keep me awake? The short answer is that true herbal and fruit infusions are naturally caffeine-free — but not everything labelled ‘tea’ is. Here is how to tell the difference at a glance.
The simple rule
Caffeine comes from the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. So black tea, green tea, white tea and matcha all contain caffeine, with black tea generally highest and green tea lower. Herbal and fruit ‘teas’ — chamomile, mint, hibiscus, anise, pomegranate, forest fruit and the like — are not made from the tea plant at all. They are infusions of herbs, flowers and fruit, and contain no caffeine.
Best caffeine-free choices
If you want a cup that will not interfere with your sleep, reach for a herbal or fruit blend. Chamomile is the classic calming choice for the evening. Mint and anise are light and refreshing after a meal. Fruit blends like pomegranate & berries are naturally sweet and satisfying. All of these can be enjoyed late in the day without a second thought.
What about ‘decaf’?
Decaffeinated black or green tea has had most of its caffeine removed, but a small trace usually remains. A naturally caffeine-free herbal or fruit infusion is the cleaner choice if you want to avoid caffeine entirely. Lavina’s herbal and fruit range is caffeine-free by nature, so you can enjoy a warm cup any time — including right before bed.
